Pride
There's a fine line
between confidence and arrogance, but most people
can detect pride when they see it. When
you hear the word pride a particular classmate
or coworker probably immediately comes to mind.
Pride says to do things my
way because it is more important for things to
be done in a certain fashion than to make sure
they are correct.
Pride shows up in places
that you wouldn't expect in churches.
There are people in every church who cling to traditions or believe that
things must be done a certain way without
exploring other possibilities. We don't
think of these things as being prideful because
they aren't self-centered. In fact they
are often even well intentioned.
Those who are wise will
listen to advice from other people before
choosing a course of action. They are
willing to admit that someone may have a better
idea and want to choose the best idea, not the
one that they originally held to.
To fight pride one must
have humility. Humility involves listening
to other people and giving them an honest chance
when they present something contrary to what you
want. Pushing through with your own way
will cause problems but listening to advice will
help you make the best decisions. |
