16 Covering
an Offense
1 Corinthians 13 is known
as the love chapter of the Bible. It is
often recited in wedding ceremonies and is the
favorite passage of many couples including
non-Christians. It is also misunderstood
by many.
Love keeps no record of
wrongs. This means we don't hold something
against someone. The old adage is to
forgive and forget. Of course this is
easier said than done. This proverb goes
one step further.
When we cover over an
offense we're obviously not covering up a crime.
It means that we go out of our way to make
things right. If someone hurts you and
they are the one that should really be seeking
you out to ask for forgiveness you can still
approach them in order to patch the
relationship.
On the other hand, repeat
offenders cause great damage in a relationship.
We can continually forgive someone for doing
something wrong but that doesn't mean there
still isn't harm done. We can love someone
but there might always be a bit of mistrust
going forward.
As Christians we must do
all that we can to promote love and forgiveness
and remember that if we harm someone it can have
long lasting effects. |
