Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, "May you never bear fruit again!" Immediately the tree withered.

Nothing But Leaves

When leaves come out on a fig tree it means that it is time for harvest.  Jesus is not mad simply because he wanted a fig and found none on the tree.  He curses the tree because it gives the appearance of being fruitful but in fact it is worthless.

There are many people who can appear to be fruitful but they are only fooling people from a distance.  At some point someone will look for fruit from that person and not find it.

When Jesus looks for fruit in our lives and does not find it He is not pleased.  This was the case with the nation of Israel.  The cursing of the fig tree was a picture of the Israelites.

God had every reason to expect fruit from the people of Israel.  They had been cared for by God all throughout their history.  They had judges and kings raised up by God.  They had prophets to tell them the instructions of God.  And they had Jesus come to them.  But in the end they were fruitless and fell under the judgment of God.

Likewise Christians have no excuse for fruitlessness.  We have the Word of God and we have the Holy Spirit to help us.  The appearance of fruitfulness isn't good enough because we will be discovered.  God wants actual fruit from Christians.
