1 Corinthians 14:16-17
If you are praising God with your spirit, how
can one who finds himself among those who do not
understand say "Amen" to your thanksgiving,
since he does not know what you are saying? You
may be giving thanks well enough, but the other
man is not edified.

21 Agreement in Thanksgiving
As Paul writes the Corinthians, he is
addressing the issue of speaking in tongues and
the way that they had misused the gift.
His advice is applicable to all Christians about
how we should conduct our thanksgiving however.
Our thanksgiving should edify other
believers. There are times when we give
thanks in private but when we do so publicly it
should be of benefit to those around us.
When we thank God in public, other people
should be reminded that things that we give
thanks for are gifts from God. If they
have received similar gifts, they should be
prompted to thank God for them as well.
When there is agreement in thanksgiving, a
great thing happens - offers of thanks spread.
It can start like a small spark inside of a
church. One person gives thanks and then
another realizes that they have the same thing
to be thankful for. Soon the entire church
can be praising God for the same thing and the
whole church is edified in their thanks. |
