Joshua 24:14-15
"Now fear the LORD and serve
him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods
your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and
in Egypt, and serve the LORD. But if
serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then
choose for yourselves this day whom you will
serve, whether the gods your forefathers served
beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites,
in whose land you are living. But as for me and
my household, we will serve the LORD."

Serve the Lord
This is one of my favorite
passages in all of the Bible. Joshua is
near the end of his life and draws a line in the
sand and essentially says that the people are
either with him or they are not. But he
concludes by stating it doesn't matter which
side everyone else is on, he will serve the
Lord.
Sometimes we need tough
talk to spur us on to action. Many
Christians want the best of both worlds and
straddle the fence. They know their need
for God and church is an important part of their
life. But they also have other activities
pulling them away. Or they're afraid of
being viewed as a religious fanatic by their
friends.
The best of both worlds is
really the best of neither. When someone
straddles the fence, they miss out on the
abundant life that only comes from full devotion
to God. And they'll still be annoyed when
church interferes with something they would
rather do or when a friend comments about them
being too religious.
Serving God is a choice.
While it is a once in a lifetime choice that we
will follow Christ, it is also a daily choice
of whether we will do what God wants us to do
today. Joshua made it clear what his
choice was, what is yours? |
