Hebrews 8:13
By calling this covenant "new," he has made the
first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and
aging will soon disappear.

Obsolete
In today's world things become obsolete faster
and faster. Regardless whether we like it,
it is a matter of fact. Even with God
things become obsolete though.
When God gave us the New Covenant, it made the
old covenant obsolete. It did not make the
laws that God gave us beforehand worthless
however. The laws that God gave Moses were
for a reason and they are just as applicable
today.
What became obsolete was the method of salvation
in the Old Testament. Then a person was
saved through the following of the law.
Because no one could follow the law though,
sacrifices were put in place to atone for the
sins of the people.
With the New Covenant, Jesus is the once-for-all
sacrifice. We are still unable to uphold
the law and are in need of a sacrifice for our
sins. But now Jesus has taken care of
those sacrifices.
Just as the Old Testament sacrifices didn't
negate the need to obey God, neither does Jesus'
sacrifice do away with the law. We live in
an era of grace but that grace should not be
taken advantage of. As Paul writes, by no
means should we sin so that grace may abound. |
