Judges 16:11-12
11 He said, "If anyone ties me securely
with new ropes that have never been used, I'll
become as weak as any other man."
12 So
Delilah took new ropes and tied him with them.
Then, with men hidden in the room, she called to
him, "Samson, the Philistines are upon you!" But
he snapped the ropes off his arms as if they
were threads.

New Isn't Perfect
The story of Samson and Delilah is one of
foolishness and physical attraction triumphing
over common sense. But it also shows us
that new things aren't always the solution that
we are looking for.
Several times Delilah tried to find the source
of Samson's strength and multiple times he hid
the true source of his strength. In this
instance he told Delilah that if he were bound
with new ropes that he would lose his strength.
There is nothing special about new ropes except
they are new. Aside from old a frayed ones
that have been damaged through years of wear,
new ropes are just like any other rope.
They all serve the same function.
Often we become convinced that new is better
simply because it is new. We should be
careful not to fall into this trap however.
There are many times when new is better because
it replaces something worn out or broken.
Something new may be more efficient and cheaper
to operate or it may have new, helpful features.
Being new does not guarantee in any way that an
object is better however. A new car or new
pair of shoes won't necessarily fix our problem
just as new ropes failed to bind Samson. |
