Nobody enjoys rules.
This isn't a secret. But there are rules
everywhere we go that are developed for our
safety. The speed limit is not only to
keep us safe but other drivers who may be
injured as a result of our reckless driving.
God has rules as well.
He isn't some sort of cosmic killjoy who is out
to ruin our fun. We might not understand
some of the rules as they were intended but God
had our best interests in mind as He developed
them.
God gave Moses ten rules
by which to live. Jesus consolidated these
rules down into two. The Pharisees had
hundreds of laws that governed everyday life.
No matter how it was divided though, no one
could live by the law 100% of the time.
Aside from protecting us,
the point of the law was to show us our need for
a Savior. We can't follow the law and
hence we sin. The Old Testament sacrifices
were offered as an atonement for sin but they
simply covered over sin.
Jesus is our once and for
all sacrifice because we couldn't follow the
law. His death on the cross washed away
our sins completely, not just covered them up.
This month we will look at some of the laws that
we struggle to keep as well as God's solution to
the problem.
